Chain hook hoists are designed to withstand extensive wear and tear. As a result of their strength, little to no routine maintenance is needed. Maintenance usually isn't necessary, but a hook hoist should be regularly inspected (especially if safety is a key factor in your operation). Before using your chain hoist, you should inspect three major components of the machine. This includes:
Make sure that the braking mechanism is fully functional. Lifting a load 6 to 12 inches before lowering it to its original position can easily check this. This check allows you to see if there is any slippage or free run.
Closely inspect all hooks. Wear and tear can create nicks, breaks, cracks, and distortions. If you notice any deformities on the hook, it is time to replace it. When checking the hook, you should also make sure that the hook latch is functional and that it can turn freely.
Inspect the load chain to make sure it is free from deformations. Over time, a chain will twist, break, and have damaged links. It is important to make sure that your chain is clean (free of rust and foreigner materials).
Wire Rope
Inspecting your hook hoist is the best way to avoid breakdowns and dangerous situations. Getting new rigging supplies or crane wire rope (vrope) can help to keep your machines running like new. If you are in the market for chain hoist repair, give us a call at Bilco today!
