The general classification of wire rope types depends on two main factors: the number of outer strands and the number of wires in each strand. The problem with these general classifications is that they do not always accurately reflect the strands' construction. Beyond general classifications of different ropes, it is important to know about special construction types designed specifically for specialized lifting applications.
Rotation Resistant – for applications that cannot tolerate rotation, these specialized ropes are ideal. Rotation-resistant ropes do not spin, twist, or rotate. Depending on the construction, they can be used in a single or multi-part system. Some Rotation Resistant ropes are supplied in a Right Lang Lay or a Left Lang Lay.
Compacted – Some General Constructed wire ropes and Rotation Resistant ropes can be compacted. These ropes are manufactured with compacted strands. The advantages of using these ropes include increased resistance to wear, strong crush resistance, and better overall strength.
Plastic Impregnated – these wire ropes have a plastic matrix that fills in the gaps between wires and strands. Plastic improves bending fatigue by reducing external and internal wear. It would help if you used these ropes in the most demanding lifting applications.
Plastic Coated – These wires are like plastic impregnated wires; however, plastic coats the wire rope's exterior surface. These ropes should be used when you need strong and reliable protection against abrasion and environments that typically cause corrosion. Plastic makes inspecting wires difficult because it is hard to see the wires under the plastic.
