Wire Ropes are Versatile

Most people think of a crane wire rope as a single tool that does one job. Although this is true, it is not that simple. Wire rope is created with a series of smaller moving parts that all work in tandem to support and move loads. In essence, wire ropes are akin to mechanical devices that have multiple moving parts that all work towards a singular goal.

Wire Rope

Crane wire rope is attached to a hoist or crane, and it is fitted with rigging supplies like hooks, swivels, and shackles (to move loads in a controlled manner). Wire ropes are commonly used on cranes and hoists, but they are also used to lift and lower elevators, bring skiers up to the top of mountains, and raise and lower drawbridges.

Manufacturers and engineers prefer wire rope for multiple reasons. Ropes are designed with multiple wires that form strands that are laid around a strong core. The structure of the rope offers great strength and flexibility. It is also able to withstand bending stresses. We construct ropes in different configurations to create unique ropes that have a designated purpose. Not all lifting jobs are the same, and so proper ropes are needed to safely complete work.

Characteristics we can enhance or decrease include:

  • Strength
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Crushing resistance
  • Fatigue resistance
  • Rotation resistance. Flexibility
